We made a boat in three nights to see the 4th of July fireworks in Boston from the Charles River.

We made the boat with shelving and loft materials from my old dorm room.  Our plan was to make a "boat" structure, apply caulking liberally, then paint over the entire boat with a waterproof paint.

We did some research and found that exterior acrylic latex house paint was the right paint to use.  We went to the local hardware store and got a gallon of their paint for about $20, and several tubes of $3 caulk.

We put it in the water and.... it worked.  It only had a slow leak, that we ignored and simply bailed out some water every 15 min.  We went onto the river with 5 people and anchored in prime waters in front of the fireworks barge.

If we wanted the boat for more than just that night, we should have made the holes in the wood smaller and used less caulk, as when we were taking it out of the water the wood on the dock gouged out some of the softer caulk creating a hole that we would have had to fix if we wanted to put it in the water again.

Overall, the lesson learned is that with caulk and the exterior house paint, it is quite easy to build a good boat.
